Mouse Models Shaping Antiviral Vaccine Development

Summary

This webinar explores how diverse mouse models, ranging from conventional inbred strains to genetically engineered and immune-humanized and other xenograft systems, have been used to develop and refine antiviral vaccines.

Taking influenza as our example due to the wealth of literature available, we will consider:

  • C57BL/6 and BALB/c inbred strains as foundational models in vaccine testing and immunogenicity
  • Genetically engineered mice expressing humanized receptors or HLA alleles that improve viral entry and antigen presentation
  • Humanized immune system models, such as immunodeficient NSG mice engrafted with human PBMCs, which enable assessment of human-specific immune responses in situ that inform vaccination strategies.
  • Future directions in xenograft model development that will provide further insight into tissue-specific human immune responses to this respiratory pathogen.

Broadly, each of these strategies represent a piece of the puzzle of antiviral immunity; we hope our discussion provides a framework for selecting the most appropriate model depending on your specific research goals.
